George R. R. Martin's A Song of Ice and Fire series. If you can make it through the steaming pile of crap known as the Inheritance Cycle, you will have your mind blown by ASoIaF. I must warn you, though, its incredibly mature.

U know, I think the 3rd book should have been called "Empire" so the 4th (and final) book could be called "Erador".
