What better way to begin my weekend at Railfest in Altoona, PA than with a shot of E8s 5809 and 5711 on Horseshoe Curve with their excursion train? While I missed my chance at an upgrade shot when they passed just after I arrived at the park, I WAS set up to catch them on their return trip.

  • Ahhhh-- what TOTALLY awesome E8's!! I had forgotten how long they were. And SO SO beautiful in the PRR Tuscan Red. And that horn-- geez, I wish he had showed off with the horn a bit more!!! Are those old AMTK cars in the consist.?.. I noticed a couple of probably old PRR cars on the rear I think. This is totally beautiful and it certainly is exactly what you say... "crowd pleaser", me being part of the "crowd" LoL!!

  • The coaches are from SEPTA; Amtrak does have some of a similar design though. NJ Transit also uses the same design. I think with the E's being based near Philly it's easy for SEPTA to loan the coaches prior to the E's setting out for Altoona.

The two rear cars are Juniata Terminal's Warrior Ridge and Pennsylvania 120, owned by the same individual as the E8s I believe.

  • I wish I could go to railfest but my dad says its a waste of time

  • Hehe...the 4 tapes I filled up say otherwise. I did stay away from the museum events though, and actually shot much less at Horseshoe than at other locations. But it was a great time.

  • LOL, exactly what I just mentioned I was afraid of in another vid, what exactly did he say and do?

I was down past the Gallitzin tunnels on the track side of the guardrail during the 3rd run on the 27th and he didnt ask me to move, just looked at the group of us, leaned over the guardrail to look down and make sure we werent too close then smiled and got back in the Jeep and drove off.

  • Ahhhh the only EB excursion I shot during Railfest. After this...we got the BIG BOOT from the unmarked cherokee!!

  • Nope, wish I had had my cap with me though, my scalp got sunburned something fierce that day. I would have had a blue and green Hawaiian shirt on.

  • did u have a white shirt and a white hat on?

  • I agree, there are too many foamtards hanging around the Railroader's Memorial Museum, the curve can get pretty crowded, too.

There are so many other (maybe not better) places to go when there's so many people.

  • I'm planning another trip to Ashland one morning in July. I just have to check my calendar when I get home from Nags Head.

  • See I would go to railfest, but it just be like going any other day with the amount of trains.
