This song is set around the Orwell novel of the same name, whose hero George Bowling wins a bit on the horses and decides to escape for a day or two from suburban monotony. He heads for his childhood town which, of course, has greatly changed. The Second World War is also imminent. In the show we use a lovely excerpt from the book where George bends down to pick some primroses and wonders why we miss the beauty all around us.
