In this film is previously unseen footages taken during the West Somerset Railway Spring Steam Gala back in March. It contains footages of mainly locomotives that used to work on the Somerset & Dorset Joint Railway before being closed in March 1966.
Following my last 'Generations' film last summer, I decided with all these footages that a sequel should be made, but in a S&D theme.

The film begins with S&DJR 7F No. 88 loudly departing Stogumber, beginning its climbe to Crocombe Heathfield. The next two scenes feature double heading with LMS Black 5 No. 45231 'The Sherwood Forester' and SR rebuilt WC light pacific No. 34046 Braunton, with 45231 carrying the Pines Express headboard. The first scene sees the duo begin the climbe to Crowcome from Bishops Lydeard at Whiskey Trial Crossing. The second scene sees the pair again at Castle Hill, this time after being turned at Minehead facing Bishops Lydeard.
In the final scene, the spring sun sets with a glow on 34028 Eddystone as she passes Leigh loop.

  • A great film on the basis it lets the trains and locos do all the work - no fancy editing, no zooming in and out and thank goodness, no music!

    Great stuff!

Can't wait to go and see the WSR for myself.

  • @mlcmuk I'm glad you've mentioned that, as I have seen that in some films that do that sorta stuff, unnescessary zoom-ins when a loco approaches and pop/rock music that ruin films of steam, that really embarresses me alot.

I also wish you luck on coming down to the WSR, hopefully you'l enjoy :)

  • Great video..is this the rebuilt S&D line starting at Midsomer Norton south??? I thought one cutting near Chilcompton was in-filled and one tunnel blocked up??

  • Uh ha, no. This is the preserved West Somerset Railway. The line has a preserved S&D 8F aswell as a S&D Trust based at Washford. So the line has in recent times played a part in the its legacy.
