The Mother Lode Restaurant and Bar in Ohio City, Colorado, is located in a building that dates back to early 1900s when it was known as Hendricks & Company General Merchandise and served the needs of miners and railroad workers in the area of the historic Alpine Tunnel.
John Swatzel, proprietor of The Mother Lode, offers patons hometown hospitality and a wholesome meal surrounded by a decor that preserves much of the look the building had around the beginning of the 20th century.
Visitors to the Alpine Tunnel usually stop at The Mother Lode for a hearty meal before heading up to the tunnel.
The Alpine Tunnel was the first railroad tunnel to pierce the Continental Divide at more than 11,000 feet. It and the narrow gauge railbed that hugs mountian cliffs overlooking Quartz Creek Valley is hailed as one of the greatest engineering marvels in railroad history.
