i recently had the privelege of playing a show in oslo, norway, and my favorite part of the trip (besides the show!), was getting to visit the emanuel vigeland mausoleum

emanuel vigeland was a well-known artist in oslo who built this building as a museum for his work in 1926. he eventually decided that it should serve as his burial place, and now his ashes reside above the entrance.

all the windows were closed up and when you enter the cavernous room, there is very little light and you can't really see anything. as your eyes begin to adjust, you realize that the enormous barrel-vaulted room is completely covered by vigeland's fresco paintings depicting human life from conception until death.

the acoustics of the room are amazing...there is something like a 12 second delay to every little sound that happens inside. they have concerts there, and they let me bring my guitar in for a private visit.

it's hard to capture on video, but the experience of this place was pretty incredible. it is a little bit like being transported to a dark and mysterious alternate dimension.

if you're ever in oslo, make sure you stop by.

  • The Vigeland Mausoleum is truly a magical place. I have been to a few meditative resconance concerts there. Didgeridoo sounds fantastic in there by the way. The natural reverb is actually up to about 45 seconds! So I had to look if I could find somthing filmed there. I didnt expected to find THIS video. By Jay Brannan? Cool! The acoustic there really brought out that sweet voice. ^-^

Oh, I remember someone accidently slammed the door there once. Tihi!

  • I got goose-bumps!!

  • This was beautifully haunting Jay. I can't believe I hadn't watch this prior to now. Its is just so incredible. Thankyou for posting the link on Facebook. This has made my day.

  • That was awesome. Loved the echo. :)

  • SHOW OFF

  • I feel like you're echoing through my mind. Love it Jay.

  • Wish i'd be there then. This is just the natural acoustics of the tomb. Hope you come back to that place and do it again.

  • This was beautiful to listen to. I was at the mausoleum two summers ago; I was a new person upon exiting through the undersized door. Thanks for this.

  • It sounds wonderful - even in the video. Do a concert there some time... And tell me about it...

    Love you!

  • Beautiful. How perfect for that space.
