If you´re attacked with a knife, most likely yo´re gonna die. You have to train with hat in mind. But that doesn´t mean that you cannot try to defend yourself. So you train to INCREASE your posibility survival. So instead of 100% posibility of dying, maybe you can have 99% posibility of dying. Well, better that just let the attacker kill you.
There is one thing ALL teachers fail to mention: winos, weirdos, wackos, rapists and all other criminals always. . . . YELL at you ! Most people can't take that, they freeze up and slow down..
@Mike8lunch You're completely right. Usually, it's best to suck it up if someone is mugging you at knife-point. I've been practicing this for a few months, and we do knife training a lot. I still wouldn't want to be in a knife fight. It IS kind of retarded to think that you'd be able to handle a knife after only watching videos or a little bit of training.
But when you look at the instructors or even advanced novices, you can see some pretty cool shit. :D
I love flow work and knife work. It's a fun exercise. Problem is that a determined attacker with a knife is not flowing when he attacks. It's fast direct and repetative. You miss a pass you get cut. What you pass with probably gets cut. This is simply an unrealistic game that may lead people to believe that they can engage a knife with a high probability of success. knife attack death rates are about 80%. Try and look at some of the real knife attack videos and see how they go.
@Mike8lunch I have never met him; hes not a current operator but a former operator. I was told by my instructor who himself is a Police Officer training for the Diplomatic Protection Squad assigned to protecting the Prime Minister. Our school branches over the different cities of NZ; this happened at the Christchurch school after some students were concerned with slow work and asked to see a suprise attack. Its a small community here so I prbly will meet him at some point.
Ask the NZSAS operator to see his service card. Probably doesn't have one. Surprise attack with a knife is an assasination. A pro would have killed him.
unarmed against a knife? rubbish! BUT Martin Wheeler moves quite perfect and smooth. it is a very good TRAINING method not more. Big respect for Martin and systema.
@abeltrraz Well it works well enough for the elite of Soviet Spetsnaz to have used it on operations against armed opponents. Here in NZ one of the instructors gave a knife to a former NZSAS Operator and told him to attack him at any point in the class; by suprise. He demolished the guy when he attacked.
what city was this in? Ames?
