Prisoners' Inventions - Immersion Heater

This video shows how to make an immersion heater out of old tooth brushes melted together, then lined with metal clips from old paper binders. Prisoners would make devices like this to boil water for a cup of coffee or soup.

@Criminalcondotcom Oh yeah? If that were the case then quite a few prisoners would be dead....that black smoke is sometimes "caught" in an upside down cup where it is then mixed with water and used for jailhouse tattoos.....as the ink.

Ventilation in the cells here is quite fast. Yes, it does generate chlorine, but we didn't much care. I personally didn't have use for the heater, known as a 'stinger', but the men with life and no parole had nothing to lose. The RCD usually did not trip. Another method was to strip the ends of the extention cord and keep them apart with a piece of plastic, usually from cut pieces of plastic bottle. It was an inch thick. Always salt water, and always used as a double boiler.

Hope you are wearing a mask. Those fumes are extremely toxic. The little black fibers floating in the air WILL kill you,

In this state, you can't get the binders like that anymore. Also, altering toothbrushes or starting fire in a cell is a no-no. What they do here is take the end of an extention cord and throw it in a bucket of salt water. It heats the salt water to boiling in about 5 minutes. The reason they do this is because they can put plastic bags of other food in the boiling water to heat up.

Since they aren't allowed to smoke in jail anymore - at least where I live - they might have a hard time explaining how they got matches to do this kind of thing..

@tels2006 there are a lot simpler ways of making it. you can simply wrap hanger around the wire.
