Security Chiefs who gave unflinching leadership to build a Sri Lanka sans terrorism, have been granted promotions and tasked with new responsibilities.
Army Commander Gen. Sarath Fonseka is appointed as the new Chief of Defence Staff. He becomes the first officer to shoulder this responsibility after the adoption of a new Bill in Parliament vesting more powers in this position. He will supervise and co-ordinate matters in respect of the functions relating to intelligence between the armed forces.
Navy Commander Admiral Wasantha Karannagoda who discharged a noble task in the humanitarian operations is appointed as the National Security Advisor. The President entrusted the responsibilities in this position to him.
Major Gen Jagath Jayasuriya who served as the Wanni Commanding Officer is appointed as the new Army Commander. He took over the responsibilities after swearing-in before the President.
Rear Admiral Thisara Samarasinghe who served as Navy Chief of Staff is the new Navy Commander. He assumed duties in his new position before the President today. All these appointments are effective from the 15th of this month. Defence Secretary Gothabaya Rajapaksa, Presidents Secretary Lalith Weeratunga, Additional Secretary to the President Gamini Senerath, Chief of Defence Staff Air Chief Marshal Donald Perera and Air Force Commander Air Chief Marshal Roshan Goonetilleke were present.
