@AOZXRAY Travis was utterly fearless, utterly committed to what he believed, a great writer, and yes he had his marriage problems, and if he had to do it over he probably would wish he had done it differently, but he was a driven man and great leader, and would have probably been president of Texas had he lived, as has been said.

Travis was a young man with more energy than he rightly know what to do with, however, the Powers That Be used him to ignite the revolution and hold the Alamo together.

Sam Houston was a great statesman (with admitted flaws), Rep. David Crockett was a politician of principle who did not hesitate to split with his political patron (Pres. Jackson) on the slavery issue. But William Barret Travis was an absolute punk. Yes, he rose to the occasion when it mattered, but he should be remembered as more of a teenage delinquent with a law degree than an American military hero.

Reality is rarely black and white. The majority of the Mexican army was composed of conscripts who couldn't read and had no interest in war. Why on Earth would these men want to die for something they were incapable of understanding? This makes them less then ideal soldiers. Mexicans however can fight and fight well when they have a reason to fight and when they are reasonably led.
