  • I would think that the row covers should be made of a dark colored material in order to absorb the heat. (One could, I assume, use any kind of fabric, such as cotton, nylon or rayon?

How effective is this approach? I mean, do they just keep the frost off, or do they actually keep the plant warm? For example, if the weather drops to 20 degrees Farenheit, will the plan be undamaged?

    Thanks.

  • There are different thicknesses of covers. Some can protect to the upper 20s, but 20 is pretty cold and the fabrics are meant to extend the growing season a bit, but won't extend it into hard hard freezes. Hope that helps.

  • There is a revolutionary way of protecting plants and crops from cold, frost and heat damage by using biological and ecological product called CROPAID Natural Plant Antifreeze from UK. This is an amazing products which is applied by foliar spray before the cold and frosty weather to prevent or reduce damage to a minimum. It has temporary effect lasts up to two weeks. The product has won several awards and used globally by professionals and is the best. More information please visit cropaid.com.

  • In other words, is it the frost that kills the plants (which can be kept off via covers) or the cold (which I don't think a white cover will help)?

    Thanks.

  • I put some plastic up on my deck to protect my plants. The first frost was accompanied with a wind storm which tore the plastic and killed off all the plants. I'm wondering if the ambient temperature is 28 degs, is the plant, under the row cover, also 28 degs, but since the cover prevents frost from building up, the plant is ok? A cover doesn't generate heat (though if it were a dark color, it would focus heat on the plant during the daytime), all it seems to be doing is keeping the frost off.

  • thank you!! The weather here just got cold, and I was wondering about my hydrangeas!
