Testing lipstick on your lips is a BAD BAD idea unless they have cut the top off or its been disinfected (and you've seen them do it).
Swiping lipstick on the back of your hand give a great colour indication but not the one you get on your lips. Your finger tips have are much closer to your actual lips so testing them on the tips of your fingers, while strange will go along way to knowing how the colour will look on your actual lips :)
