Locke and Berkeley

This program examines the philosophies of British empiricists John Locke and George Berkeley. Philosopher Michael Ayers of Oxford interprets Locke's skeptical theory that all knowledge is sensory and speculative, and that the true nature of the world can never be known as an attack on Descartes' theory of innate ideas. Conversely, Berkeley insists that we cannot have sensory knowledge of material substances because the exist only in the mind. Even the laws of nature, Berkeley says are merely the regularities of our own perceptions or ideas.

  • These are great. Thanks. When did the show originally air?

  • I think it was some time in the 80s. Look for Bryan Magee on imdb and all the programs, and corresponding air dates, will show up.

  • Ha, don't worry more is coming...

  • Bryan Magee is the shit.

  • Flame, you're the man for posting these. Bryan McGee is an awesome host and really makes the topics interesting by putting them into perspective. His explanations of the standard interpretation of these Philosophers gives a nice background before going in and reading these guys for yourself.

Are there any more episodes out there that you haven't posted??

  • this has less views than Justin Beiber...yet we call ourselves an intelligent species?

  • i got to a community college so i almost always end up on you tube trying to learn what my teacher failed at teaching... Thank you professor for not showing up to lecture 2 days before our test!

  • Terific Thanks Flame0430 and Youtube for doing this great service. Berkeley.. The philosopher so far rejected by intelligentsia, may stage a spectacular comeback, given the recent advances made in physics, especially quantum physics. Though his theory may not be owned up in whole by science, but atleast substantial portions of it may be viewed in new light.

  • Ah, finally found one that I haven't watched before. keep posting these

  • Oh and another thing all yous guys should add me on youtube id love to have u all as friends. well interweb friends.

  • Can i get these shows on dvd? oh to some one who said that they wished that they could find something in philosphy presented in a more understandable way...check out From socrates to Satre(?) the philosophic quest. that is such a great book. its detailed yet not so wordy and is like the philo bible! also after a tv show.

  • Thanks, very useful stuff!

  • Yes, illegal immigrants have natural rights.

  • Respect for all the videos you have uploaded concerning Bryan Magee's interviews.
