Ovett did have a great moment in 1986 when he won Commonwealth 5000m beating Buckner and Hutchings by a mile. remember these two were top runners in the world. this was before the resurgence of the Africans.
In the first world champs in 1983 between 800m and marathon there was not one African male gold medal - they were in America running for money in the road

Ovett was never the same after the LA 84 olympics where he had bronchitis.

1985 was a bad year for Ovett he never really got going - highlight was at the end of the season when he beat Cram in the London mile
