History Bill turns up in Dayton in 1925 and gets an earful from William Jennings Bryan and Clarence Darrow. Yep, it's the famous Scopes Trial, and he gets to see the whole thing -- even the monkey on the courthouse yard.

This is utter nonsense. Scopes only pretended to have taught evolution. The trial wasa publicity stunt sponsored by local businessmen.

There's a school of thought that the whole trial was set up by local civic boosters to draw visiters and fame to Dayton. Scopes actually was a substitute teacher of science who initially couldn't recall teaching evolution- but he was persuaded to play along because defense counsel wanted to test the law. One thing IS certain: it wasn't "Inherit the Wind".Bryan's son and Scopes actually went swimming together, Darrow spoke publically at local churches, and John Scopes was never held in jail.
