  • It was a Colonolcy he was offered

  • Very fitting analysis of Chamberlain's command up to & including July 2, 1863.

What's even more remarkable is that he went on to obtain a brevet commission as Maj. Gen.of volunteers after being almost mortally wounded at Petersburg. After recovering, he was selected by Grant to accept the formal surrender of the Army of Northern Virginia at Appomattax. He was offered a Regular Army commission of Maj. Gen., but returned to Maine- dying almost 50 years later from his Petersburg wounds.
