"Mera Bharat Kahan?!" is a set of videos dedicated to the Hindustani community of Jamaica. Series A deals with vocabulary specific to Indo-Jamaican Patois. By Indo-Jamaican Patois, I refer to the dialect of Jamaican Patois spoken by the Hindustani community of Jamaica. It differs from normal Patois in the inclusion of a considerable amount of vocabulary derived from Hindi, Urdu, and Bhojpuri. God willing, I will upload more soon!

  • Someone told me this sounds similar to Creolese (Guyanese Creole) spoken by the Indo-Guyanese people. Do you communicate with them?

  • @rootsnlivity Indians in JA, Trinidad, & Guyana came from the same parts of India. When they came to the Caribbean, they developed a lingua franca called Caribbean Hindustani, which is a form of Bhojpuri w/ admixture from other Indian languages and English. As Indians began to speaking English-creoles as a first language, they kept words and phrases of Caribbean Hindustani. Many words were retained independently in more than one country, so are familiar to Indians throughout the West Indies.

  • What part of Jamaica can I hear Indo-Jamaican Patwa? I would imagine Westmoreland as there's many Indian descendants there. Am I right or wrong?

  • @rootsnlivity "Indo-Jamaican Patwa" is simply Jamaican Patois with the inclusion of loan words from Caribbean Hindustani. It would be found among Indians all over Jamaica, though the usage of loan words will likely increase with the age of the person, and the loan words are more likely to be used when speaking with other Indians. I can't comment on whether usage is more common in some areas over others. I have based the videos on what I learnt from my family, which is from St. Mary.

  • great video i am working on a documentary on the east indian Jamaican community and there history. thank you for sharing this info.
