CALGARY -- Albertans were digging out Saturday from a nasty winter storm that dumped as much as 30 centimetres of snow on some parts of the province.
But, as residents put their backs into some of their first shovelling duties of the years, they got some more bad news. Friday's story was just the first salvo in a forecasted weeklong wintry walloping.
Blizzard-like conditions created havoc on streets in Calgary and Edmonton for much of Friday, with authorities urging motorists to make only essential journeys.
Calgary police responded to at least 172 crashes, including 26 injury collisions, while roads and sections of highway were closed in and around the city throughout the day.
Numerous flights were cancelled Saturday at the Calgary International Airport, while delays were posted by the Edmonton International Airport.
Snow, snow, deep snow, wherever you go.! It's beginning to look a lot like christmas!
