Air bags have prevented millions of serious injuries, but passenger side airbags can injure and even kill a small child, which is why children should always ride in the back seat. Dr. Till Jolly is an emergency room physician and an expert on airbags. He says that airbags were designed for adults, not children. The Insurance Information Institute urges parents to always place children in the back seat. If you must place an older child in the front seat, make sure that the seat is as far back as possible, and that the child is properly belted. And never place a rear-facing infant seat in the front seat, the force of the deploying airbag can kill or injure your child. Brian O'Neil of the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety says it may be very tempting for a new parent to place their infant in the front seat, where they can see it. He warns that the force of the deploying airbag can kill or injure that infant.

  • I have to ask: why the hell don't manufacturers offer an on/off switch for the passenger side airbag?!? Sometimes, I think these things cause more problems than they solve! and they say the rear seat is safest for kids? Well, what happens when you get hit by something big in the rear?! That happened to me in 1983 when I got plowed in the rear by a tractor trailer. Fortunately, I survived without major injury (I had a '54 Chevy). A daughter of a friend wasn't so fortunate.

  • @whattheheck1000 It depends more on height (and possibly weight) than anything else. But yes, they should be safe to ride in front. If you're not sure though ask a doctor.

  • I think some cars allow you to disable the air bag now for these reasons, like if a parent has to car pool. But even without an air bag, putting an infant in the front is still risky because if the baby starts crying, the driver (usually the parent) may look over and try and address them, thus distracting themselves from driving the car, and kaboom!

  • is that a ford windstar at 0:03

  • This is exactly why Mercedes puts a special sensor in some of there cars that will say if there is a rear facing car seat in the passenger seat. The only problem with this is that you have to buy a car seat specificly made for this. They are called BABY SMART compatible seats i think

  • Very frightening information, especially when children are involved.

  • I was driving on a dirt road, there was a rock in the road, a few seconds later the airbags exploded randomly. I must say, It was very loud and fast.

Kan easily kill you if you lean froward.

  • Yes.

  • lol the boy has a sesame street book

  • its probably safe because the little safety paragraph on the inside mirrors suggests the person e 13 years or older in the front seat
