I remember that when we were in the earlier stages of developing our group project, we were trying to decide whether our product would be location determinant or indeterminant. We then watched this video and it helped clarify exactly what we were debating. Since were working on developing a mobile payment app, and we did not have any actual physical store, we managed to conclude that our product would mainly be location indeterminant.
I didnt know that businessess actually use the bluetooth technology to target people close in proximity. For this to be effective, people would have to turn on their bluetooths and often people dont do it for security and safety purposes. Although I have never experienced this in Toronto, it would be very interesting to see how I would react to the marketing message and if I would be tempted to go buy that starbucks coffee on sale.
I remember this discussion from class. Personalized ads, including consumer location, are the new direction of marketers and advertisers; however, there might be some privacy issues concerning this new approach, especially when the consumers aren't aware that their information is automatically given to vendors through m-commerce. It's amazing how once again there is a personal cost of convenience by technology.
Another example of this would be APPS more so for the iPhone. I have apps on my phone that when I am in a specific area, for example, Promenade Mall in Thornhill, one of my apps pushes a message to my phone telling me that a new line of clothing is now at H&M knowing that i am in the mall that has that store.
Catering ads through bluetooth to certain groups of people that are in the vicinity of your store is a great way to inform customers about what is on sale since everyone seems to be on their cellphones all the time.
Thanks, Professor Tim! Very well explained, over time I believe we will be virtually every on the planet at anytime. This will help future businesses to be truly global, thus making small businesses compete easer with bigger businesses.
Even the Internet did not completely make location a non factor. International shipping has many hassles involved such as cross boarder custom fees and higher shipping costs. For reasons above, many ebay sellers tends to avoid selling to potential oversea customers and E-commerce sites such as Amazon segment their business to different regions such as Amazon.(ca,com,uk).
Even though this is a good advertising tool, it could get very annoying. If I am walking on Queens Street, where there are numerous stores and restaurants, I do not want to get a text message every time I am in proximity of a certain eatery or a store that is having a huge sale. In fact I prefer getting emails or text messages about sales that are going on at stores that I like to shop at and where I choose to give them my information to notify me about sales/promotions.
@saracennian Actually, come to think of it, Location now does and doesn't matter. You may have to physically close to a certain spot in order to get the ad (hopefully for the advertiser, you're looking in the right direction too...), but now that businesses can figure out where you are at all times, they can potentially get at you anywhere (what this does for privacy, we'll see....)

This is a scary thought, that advertising can be personalized with my name, and it would be really annoying to get ads on my cell phone.
