Franz Welser-Möst conducts the Vienna Philharmonic New Year's Concert for the first time.
On January 1, 2011, Franz Welser-Möst takes up the baton for the annual Vienna Philharmonic New Year's Concert, which in terms of its international coverage represents the largest classical music event in the world. This year's concert will once again be broadcast on television and radio to over 70 countries worldwide. Franz Welser-Möst, following in the footsteps of Clemens Krauss, Josef Krips, Willi Boskovsky, Herbert von Karajan and Nikolaus Harnoncourt, becomes the sixth Austrian conductor to stand at the helm of the Vienna Philharmonic on the first day of the New Year. In addition to compositions from the rich repertoire of the Strauss family and its contemporaries, this year's program includes the Mephisto Waltz No. 1, by Franz Liszt. This composer is being honored on the occasion of his 200th birthday which occurs in 2011
The New Year's Concert on ORF

The televised production of the concert is in the hands of the ORF, with the European Broadcasting Union (EBU) acting as partner for the transmission across Europe. The ORF has prepared a comprehensive accompanying program for viewers in Austria, beginning on New Year's Day at 9:35 AM with a matinee in which the most attractive ballet scenes from previous New Year's Concerts will be shown. At 9:55, the programming continues with a documentary about Franz Welser-Möst, and at 10:40, the program "Auftakt" sets the stage for this traditional concert.

The New Year's Concert itself will be broadcast live and in the highest quality beginning at 11:15 AM in ORF2 and Ö1 radio. It will be broadcast again on January 6th at 8:15 PM in 3sat and on January 6th at 10:05 AM in ORF 2. In the intermission, ORF 2 will show "Die Wiener Philharmoniker auf hoher See", a documentary by Hannes Rossacher, while in Ö1 radio, Franz Welser-Möst speaks on "Im Künstlerzimmer". The documentary "Die Welt der Wiener Philharmoniker" offers insights into the daily life of the orchestra on January 2nd at 2:00 PM on 3sat.

In view of the tradition of the New Year's Concerts, which began during the Second World War, the Vienna Philharmonic performs the concert even today not only as a presentation of Viennese musical culture at the highest level, but also to send the world a New Year's greeting in the spirit of hope, friendship and peace.

  • @ChineseAtheist at least they know that! ;) But I think for lots of people Radetzky march is just an entrance to the beautiful world of classic music.

  • What a beautiful Concert, I like it.

  • como se llama la primera pieza musical?

  • It is a shame that 99% only listen to the "Radetzky march"

  • Press pause. Now press play.

    Let the spectacle begin.

Repeatedly pressing 1 = Franz Welser-Möst's exquisite interpretive exercise routine!

Repeatedly pressing 8 = an exquisitely dramatic view of a triangle!

Repeatedly pressing 7 = Franz Welser-Möst's exquisite invisible piano playing routine!

Repeatedly pressing 5 = Franz Welser-Möst's exquisite... uh...

Repeatedly pressing 9 = Franz Welser-Möst's exquisite and masterful hand flailing routine!
