Beverly Sills sings aria from the finale of Donizetti´s Roberto Devereux. As YouTube restricts the maximal lenght of one video to ten minutes, I would like only to advise you to compare her unique interpretation with other two wonderful Queens Elizabeths - Caballe and Gruberova in my second video available here as well.

  • I used to think it was Caballe or Gruberova, but without doubt, the Queen of Roberto Devereux, is Sills.

  • She really dedicated herself to this role you will be greatly missed Bev :-)

  • Thank you for posting such important video of my favorite, dramatic moment in this opera, featuring one the greatest operatic actresses in history. This is I think from the Wolf Trap production

  • a mi me parece maravillosa

  • Sills sings very well (prefer her studio recording) but as a matter of preference I find too much languor and self-pity in her interpretation of Elisabeth I over here, in the acting and singing.

  • One could say this soprano does too much of this and that and should not this and that and that. At the end of the day, it very much boils down to a preference, doesn't it? I personally don't have an issue with Gruberova's 'scooping' (if that is the correct term used) and even find it exciting and gratifying to listen to, even if it constitutes a 'faux pas' in singing or to some quarters, a reflection of 'bad taste'. Some still think Andy Warhol is. So seriously, where (who) is the yardstick?

  • F*%$ing Makarras wouldn't let her record the D in the studio recording.

  • I think Gruberova is a great artist, I like her in her Mozart roles, I've just always felt she scoops a lot and her voice is very mushy

  • 1. Gruberova

    2. Sills

    3. Caballe

    4. Gencer
