In this lesson I show you how to break down a complex-sounding (i.e. lots of notes!) jazz lick. We'll identify its bare essentials and understand it for what it is. Then we can learn to play it.

The lick goes over "So What" changes, and is very idiomatic bebop and hard-bop.

I hope this helps!

  • I've played saxophone over 50 years (off and on). mostly off. I know every jazz tune by all the hard hitters (almost), can sing or hum the tune with & without the script. Back on sax these days, with all the theory that goes along with it. I can read almost anything (sometimes, as written). YOU ARE FIRST person who broke down transcription in your way, that I understand. Now, i can transcribe directly. I can work within the contours of the tune.

    THANKS FOR THE LESSON. NYERERE

  • Thank you.

  • Extremely helpful to the newbie saxophonist! Thanks.

  • Thanks so much for your videos. I love jazz and I'm trying to pick up were I left things at. I started in 1986 with the alto and finished high school in 1991. Since that time I have only picked up my sax around Christmas, but now (at age 37) I am determined to develop a jazz skill.

  • Thanks! I have been always told to "boil" things down.......but this visual really makes it crystal clear!
