Chicago is the largest city in Midwestern America. It is a place you can hear`cheeseborger, cheeseborger!' and also home to a small but tight-knit, highly-educated Armenian community that gets its fair share of Armenian music stars passing through. The `city that works' has relatively few local Armenian bands per capita compared to, say, Los Angeles, New York, Detroit or Montreal, so visitors are always welcome.

A recent visitor was Seda Garibyan. A Glendale-based Armenian singer trained in Yerevan, born in Iran, Seda graced the windy city and treated its Armenian community to the finest and most complete presentation of Armenian music seen here in years by this reporter. Occuring just a few weeks ago, the concert itself was officially advertised as a summer `celebration' for the beloved 11-plus year old local Armenian monthly newspaper `Parev Monthly'. The night was sponsored mainly by Dr. Seta Sultanian -- a local M.D. with strong ties to the Armenian community here. In the northwest corner of Chicago, the large carpeted hall of the Armenian General Benevolent Union was the setting.

At 8:30pm, Seda Garibyan introduced herself to the moderately-sized, overwhelmingly Armenian-American audience, and explained her origins. She spoke straight from the heart with the instant likeability only true stars possess -- and then started singing.

Few knew beforehand who Seda Garibyan was. Few Chicago Armenians have satellite TV to watch Horizon on satellite T.V. to know who the singer, poetess Seda Garibyan is, but they learned it firsthand, and clapped wildly after every song and poem. In truth, Garibyan's dramatic readings (not necessarily rhyming poetry, and definitely not rap) were so lyrical and mesmerizing that they seemed from an Armenia of the future.

Not just a singer, Seda is also a poet. The poetry spoke of love from heaven and bonds in cyberspace. The lyrics appealed to late teenagers as well as to those well past middle age. The audience, young and old, was won over quite quickly. The first half of the concert included songs like `Mama,' which evoked tears from many. Folk and national songs and dances popularized in the 1980's and 1990's with deep roots in the Armenian people's musical cultural tradition finished off the first half.

Noone left during intermission, and the second half was even better. Gedashen, Lerner Haireni, Tzayn Mu Hnchets received rousing applause and evoked pumping fists from excited new fans of the singer. Tzayn me Hnchets is regarded as the first Armenian revolutionary song, with powerful lyrics. Seda broke from recent trends - singing the two refrains in the same manner - and presented the powerful song in the ancient style, in which the second saying of, for example, `hayots lerneren' is of a higher pitch..

If that was not enough, the audience was nearly floored with a world-class performance of a mysterious, Mesrobian-esque harvest song called `Gharabaghi Horovel.' The 31 songs and readings - mostly songs - included songs from Sayat Nova, Ashough Jivani (3 songs), Kousan Ashod (Zepyuri Nman), and numerous beloved folk and dance songs. It would take a paragraph just to list all the songs in the 3-hour concert!

The performance was the `real deal' and a complete package. It included a bit of everything, with quality singing, confident expressiveness, and a stage presence that will not be forgotten. Her song catalog was extensive, and Chicago thanks Glendale for letting us borrow this star.
