@TechWriter1952 I arrived on the Glacier in '74 while it was in dry dock (Bethleham steel, Terminal Is. Ca.) Once sea worthy we sailed to Antarctica only to have for late in our deep freeze operation attempt to rescue the San Martin'. What an adventure being aboard for two years that I will always remember in good spirit. Square knot sailor John Piott

Here's a link to another Glacier sailor's site. We went farther south than any other ship on my cruise. Our hole in the hull was 6 feet long by 6" wide on the very bottom of the ship. A lube oil compartment was punctured, but that kept us afloat.

I was on the Glacier in Antarctica in 1969-1970. We hit an iceberg which put a hole in the hull, rescued the San Martin, and got stuck in 25 feet + of ice. I was picked for the winter over crew, but luckilly the wind changed direction and 200 miles of ice, thinned out. Nice video,,, from a square knot sailot.

Your comments are very interesting. When I reported for duty abooard the Glacier in 1973, she was in drydock with a hole high in the bow big enough to drive a jeep through. I wonder how many times the Glacier rescued the San Martin and prepared to winter over?
