Went on a trip this evening to my local station at Brighouse to see LMS (BR liveried) 'Royal Scot' 7P 4-6-0 46115 'Scots Guardsman' on the "Yorkshire Scot" railtour for its booked water stop. 46115 is famous for its appearance in the 1936 film "Night Mail".

This is my first view of a 'Royal Scot' in the flesh and it looks like a lovely loco, powerful, sounds nice etc. 46115 easily lifted the 11 coach train from Brighouse with no effot what-so-ever, eventhough most locomtives i've seen at Brighouse have slipped away, rain or shine! The BR green livery it carries looks quite emaculate against the maroon coaches. After today, I can't wait to see 6100 'Royal Scot' at the North Yorkshire Moors Railway in October (Overhaul depending) to give a comparison between BR Green with Smoke Deflectors and LMS Crimson Lake with no Smoke Deflectors.

Today 46115 was named 'The Girl Guide" (more infomation about why would be appreciated). 'The Girl Guide' was origionally numbered 6168 when it was built by the London Midland & Scottish at its Derby locomotive works in October 1930. It was the second to last locomotive of the 'Royal Scot' class to be built, the other being 6169 'Boy Scout'. When rebuilding of the 'Royal Scot' class was undertaken, 6168 rebuild took place in April 1946. 'The Girl Guide' was took into BR ownership in 1948 and was withdrawn and cut up in May 1964.

Below is a list of shed allocations for 46168 'The Girl Guides' from 1948:
|Camden (Passenger - 1B) from 1948 - 1960
|Preston (24K) from 1960 - 1962
|Wigan (Spring Branch - 8F) from 1962 - 1963

The above history was compiled from the following websites:

  • Like haloo3, I was lucky enough to be on this charter. The return run was nothing short of incredible, getting back into Liverpool an amazing one hour early!

    Cracking shots! 5*

  • Thanks for the generous comment!

Yeah, she rather took me by surprise when she was arriving, 5 minutes early. Then took me by surprise as well when she was departing because she departed 15 mins early. So must have been "Storming"after Brighouse!

  • Love the video was actually aboard.

The Scots Guardman was renamed for the day "The Girl Guide" as this was a special charter for the St. Helens guides troops for there 100th annirversary. The charter name (St. Helens Girl Guides Express) on the front having been removed to present to the area commissioner. Really just a nice bit of PR by the owners.

  • I new that it was the anniversary of something to do with Girl Guides but wasn't sure, so I didn't wan't to say something that wasn't right. Yeah, the owners must have been happy with the PR this will have created.

Thanks for the comment and the info!
