Technique is very marginal at best. Tips are highly engineered devices. The ratio of the length to the diameter, L/D, is critical to several performance characteristics including cut quality (kerf width, angle of cut & dross). Most importantly, a shorter L/D reduces the constriction of the electrical arc which reduces the voltage - this will result in more misfires or "pop outs" and more rapid wear of the tip.
Will it cut? Maybe. Will it reduce performance and productivity? Yes.
