aikido came from aikijutsu do your homework before you comment. Training in traditional martial arts should give us two things, physical capability to defend ourselves as well as show peace to this world. martial arts isn't all about fighting.
The samurai didn't use Aikido, they used Jujutsu. Aikido is a watered down version of jujutsu joint locks mixed with a bullshit passive philosophy. Aikido practitioners don't use hard sparring, they don't use realistic situations and the co-operate completely with eachother - Aikido is nothing more than ballet with a veneer of martial arts. I'd bet on someone with six months of BJJ and Muay Thai over someone with ten years of Aikido.
its not useless, those movements they do is to realize that you only use your core and be rediculous strong.
even a small girl can lift a tall big guy with just a simple technique.. everything they do is based on holding on a katana. they move like they are dodging and attacking with an sword. Aikido came from samurais, they were there roots and do samurais were useless? thats up 2 u.
Sure. I guess the true essence of budo or martial arts themselves lie in every individual martial artist. Maybe Ueshiba understood "Aikido" as some sort of "universal" essence. He did have a very profound picture of love.
"The art of peace."
It was probably a more philosophical statement that a technical one. Especially because he didn't bind "Aikido" to the MARTIAL art, but to life itself.
"simply quoting Ueshiba. :)" Ah, ok. I see. My bad. Sorry. I didn't know that. But I still don't quite agree, even though I think I understand Ueshiba's sentiments, after experiencing WWII a bit.
There are different styles of aikido:
Aikikai Aikido founded by Morihei Ueshiba after WW2
Ki Aikido founded by Koichi Tohei after he had a lesson from Morihei Ueshiba
Aikijitsu or Aikibudo also founded by Morihei Ueshiba in the 20,30's .
And where do you base your argument on that i've said martial arts is about fighting?
it is true that it gives you the physical capability to defend yourself, but dont forget about the mental, emotional, and spiritual part.

What an utterly useless martial art. I'd love to see some Judo blackbelt come in and destroy the turd.

I was simply quoting Ueshiba. :)
And that is what he understood as the "essence of budo".
