Ill put it better. Stanford changed mascots (and eventually went over with a tree roaming the sidelines) because they were once the Indians, and Political Correctness took out the team name.

You don't think it has anything to do with the halftime show that started it all, when Stanford U was publicly deciding on a new mascot? And the band joked that since "Palo Alto" was the town, the mascot should be a tree? Along with other mascot proposals like the Robber Barons... only the tree stuck, being so ridiculous and farcical. No, that's not it, we stole it from some guy in Philadelphia, that makes a lot more sense.
