To all the "slow it down" people - Uh, that would kind of defeat the purpose of "Ash Wednesday and Lent in TWO MINUTES". Geez, could you miss the point more?? Get the slowed down version from your Priest or Rector during a sermon. Keep up the fine work, busted halo!

Some Catholics do the right things for the wrong reasons is what you're saying, as do non-Catholics, and many other people. I put my faith in God being in charge. He will convert hearts when they are ready, or perhaps he allows some to go astray for a time for their own good, or that of others.

As Christians our works should bear fruit. The Catholics I am around do look at Lent as obtaining a blessing or a form of merit for Salvation. It is what I Hear!!! No, I cannot look into a person’s heart, only God looks the heart of man. (1 Sam. 16:7). Not all Catholics are the same. Hope you understand where I am coming from. Lent can turn into a works based belief system (blessings and salvation) for some Catholics.

manard099, to say that, "Many Catholics believe giving something up for lent is a way to obtain God's blessing, is saying you can know what is in another persons heart. Doing works is the opposite of making it about one self, its about taking care of others. MT 25:31-46 James 2:14-26 Clearly show we are called to do works, but they would be useless if not for Christ.

Jesus makes us right with God. Catholics make it more about themselves (works based salvation). Lenten observances have developed a much more "sacramental" value. Many Catholics believe that giving something up for Lent is a way to attain God’s blessing. Lent has turned into a repeated legalistic ritual. As Christians we should be reminded of Jesus and the Cross daily. Lent does have good qualities (value of repentance, fasting, moderation, and self-denial traditionally observed).

Way to misunderstand what Lent is actually about.

No ritual can make one's heart right with God.
