  • Its been one year since I made these, and they are working great. I havrested over 1500 gallons of rain last year, and I'm already up to 220 gallons this week.

  • Well, now that winter is upon us, and I live where we already are seeing freezing temperatures, its time to disconnect my rain barrel. Since all I did before I added the barrels was cut the downspout at the right height, I just duct taped it back together. Love duct tape.

  • for connecting the two barrels you should do it at a high point not a low point. Water will not want to fill the second barrel all the way and wont have enough pressure to push the water up due to a little thing called gravity.

Having your overflow from one barrel to the other higher will allow gravity to work in your favor as one is nearly filled it will overflow into the second barrel. This works much easier.

I have some doubts as to weather this design will fill both barrels.

  • Actually you have it bacwards. Gravity is you firend when you connect the barrels at the bottom as this allows them both to fill at the same time, and more importantly, when you pump the water out of the one barrel, you are actually draing both barrels at the same time. This is where gravity is your friend. I plan onlleaving these barrels stationary and use a small utility pump to move the water to other locations (fish pond and garden).

  • As far as the thing called gravity goes, check your physiscs books on a thing called leveling, this should also clear any doubts about if the this design will fill both barrels.
