Und es waren Hirten in derselben Gegend auf dem Felde bei den Hürden, die hüteten des Nachts ihre Herde. Und siehe, des Herren Engel trat zu ihnen, und die Klarheit des Herren leuchtet um sie, und sie furchten sich sehr.

12: Choral
Brich an, o schönes Morgenlicht,
Und lass den Himmel tagen!
Du Hirtenvolk, erschrecke nicht,
Weil dir die Engel sagen,
Dass dieses schwache Knäbelein
Soll unser Trost und Freude sein,
Dazu den Satan zwingen
Und letztlich Friede bringen!

13: Rezitativ Evangelist, Engel
Tenor
Und der Engel sprach zu ihnen:
Sopran
Fürchtet euch nicht, siehe, ich verkündige euch große Freude, die allem Volke widerfahren wird. Denn euch ist heute der Heiland geboren, welcher ist Christus, der Herr, in der Stadt David.

14: Rezitativ Bass
Was Gott dem Abraham verheißen,
Das lässt er nun dem Hirtenchor
Erfüllt erweisen.
Ein Hirt hat alles das zuvor
Von Gott erfahren müssen.
Und nun muss auch ein Hirt die Tat,
Was er damals versprochen hat,
Zuerst erfüllet wissen.

Et il y avait des bergers en cette même région sur les champs près des troupeaux, et ils gardaient leurs bêtes. Et voici que l'ange du Seigneur s'approcha d'eux, et ils furent saisis d'une grande crainte.

12: Choral
Lève-toi, belle lumière du matin, et fais monter le
jour au ciel ! Peuple des bergers, ne crains point,
parce que les anges te disent : Que ce faible petit
enfant est destiné à notre consolation et notre joie,
qu'en plus il domptera Satan et enfin nous apportera
la paix.

13: Récitatif Évangéliste, l'Ange

Et l'ange leur dit :
Soprano
"Ne craignez point; voyez, je vous annonce une grande joie qui sera accordée à tout le peuple. Car aujourd'hui vous est né le Sauveur qui est le Christ, le Seigneur en la ville de David."

14: Récitatif Basse
Ce que Dieu a prophétisé à Abraham, c'est cela qu'il
montre maintenant au choeur des bergers dans son
accomplissement. Un berger a dû apprendre tout
cela d'abord de Dieu. Et maintenant c'est aussi un
berger qui doit apprendre d'abord l'action qu'il avait
annoncée jadis dans son accomplissement.

And there were shepherds in that very region in the field nearby their sheepfolds, who kept their watch by night over their flocks. And see now, the angel of the Lord came before them, and the glory of the Lord shone round about them, and they were sore afraid.

12: Chorale
Break forth, O beauteous morning light,
And bring day to the heavens!
Thou shepherd folk, be not afraid,
For thee the angel telleth
That this the helpless little boy
Shall be our comfort and our joy,
Here for to conquer Satan
And peace at last to bring us!

And the angel spake unto them:
Soprano
Be not afraid, see now, I proclaim to you news of great gladness, which all the nations of the world will learn. For to you today is the Savior born, who is Christ, the Lord, in the city of David.

14: Recit Bass
What God to Abraham did promise,
This hath he to the shepherd choir
Revealed and proven.
A shepherd all this once before
Of God to learn was destined;
And now as well a shepherd must
The deed of yore he promised us
Be first to see completed.
