The rain scene tells us much. For one, L knew his death was closing in on him. Also he knew that Light was going to kill him and most likely that he would use the Shinigami. The last scene was L saying "Congradulations Kira, it was a long battle, and although I came close you are the victor, you may kill me now". Or something to that effect.
