A hand held over a candle in angst fuelled bravado
A carbon trail scores a moist stretched palm
Trapped in the indecision of another fine menu
And you sit there and ask me to tell you the story so far
This is the story so far
Shuffling your memories dealing your doodles in margins
You scrawl out your poems across a beermat or two
And when you declare the point of grave creation
They turn round and you to tell them the story so far
This is the story so far

And you listen with a tear in you eye
To their hopes and betrayals and your only reply
Is Slainte Mhath

Princes in exile raising the standard Drambuie
Parading their anecdotes tired from old campaigns
Holding their own last orders commanding attention
We sit here and listen to all of the story so far
This is the story so far

Take it away, take it away, take it away
Take me away, take me away, take me away

From the dream on the barbed wire at Flanders and Bilston Glen
From a Clydeside that rusts from the tears of its broken men
From the realisation that we've been left behind
Is to stand like our fathers before us in the firing line

Waiting on the whistle to blow
We stand here waiting on the whistle to blow
They promised us miracles, and the whistle still blows
Broken promises but the whistle still blows
Waiting on the whistle to blow
We stand here waiting on the whistle to blow

  • Do you agree the fish era was the best written?

  • As a two-song mini-suite, Torch Song leading into this is truly exquisite...

  • My boyfriend is an absolute legend for introducing me to this song! So different to what I usually listen too, amazing!

  • amazing song about "Slainte Mhath".... true words.. hell yea.. it`s true

  • shades of the melody to the wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald. I bought this on vinyl when it came out and I was already an old Marillion fan then. This just occurred to me now. It took a while for me to realize it but it's there.

  • Slainte Mhath= Health Mother

  • @geiramk That was supposed to be a reply to flaneller - Not sure if it hooked up properly.

  • I don't necessarily get the point... In my experience at least Marillion has always been seen as one of the greats by my contemporaries. Who cares what titles and awards the papers or the entertainment industry distributes among its supporters? I remember when they turned up unannounced, under an assumed name, at The Moles Club in Bath and just played for free like they were any other hopeful band trying to make their way in the world. That in itself puts them above most of their competition.

  • @Fj00b - Thanx for this Upload !

This Songs - this Lyrics = soo fantastic.

I am from Bosnia, and my Story is not soo far away !

Clutching at Straws gives me Power, since the last 20 Years.

So I want to say here and now :

FISH + MARILLION Thank You very much for Your Music !!!

  • Surely one of the most underrated tracks from one of the most underrated bands ever. The lyrics are simply better than anything Morrisey ever wrote - or anyone else for that matter! The music is as good as anything Pink Floyd or Genesis ever made - whilst being arguably more tastefully "straight ahead" . But how often is this album mentioned in those ubiquitous "Best album ever" lists? Conclusive proof of the injutice of the world!

  • @escapedmentalman absolutely! steve hogarth isnt fit to lick fish's boots!!

  • @cevizli1

    we are getting old :-)
