EVERYONE IS GETTING ON HER FOR SOUNDING LIKE janelle monae, BUT WHAT WE'RE FORGETTING IS Janelle GOT HER STYLE FROM Andre 3000 from when she work with outkast on their Idlewild soundtrack(Call the Law" featuring Janelle Monáe) back in 05'-06'. If you see any of her earlier stuff she was real Neo Soulish.

Honestly, I like Janelle Monet, but she didn't invent her style out of nowhere. Her style is based of a retro 40's style...which is very popular among of people. So I think it's both uninformed & unfair to say VV brown is a copy.
