In this video I tried to show how a square shaped pattern emerges on the surface of some water in a Tibetan singing bowl when you hit it just right. I am flicking my finger and striking the bowl repeatedly, and when I get the timing just right, it creates a strong vibration which can be heard as well as felt. When the vibration is strong enough it creates a very interesting cymatics pattern in the water. The pattern seems to have 4 points that are located around the circle of water in the bowl at equal distances from each other. It may be a bit hard to see in the video, but the pattern creates a square like shape, and appears to be most defined at the 4 corners of the square, where the water pattern touches the bowl. The pattern reminds me very much of this crop circle here.

I also have access to a number of tuning forks, so if anyone has any ideas on how to use tuning forks to create cymatics patterns in water, I am all ears. :)

  • Yeah every bowl has that. 4 points in the water. Take it with you in a bath. You will not only feel these vibrations. But as well see patterns over the bath water surface. In the beginning the bowl hardly continues to resonates, but after 5 minutes of hitting it in a bath everything is effected by it and the bowl rings long with overtones. If you give it a spin it will turn for long time with sound. Put a bubbler under the bowl in water and you have cool sound effects. Peace

  • I'd have to say that out of all that I've viewed so far, that this is my favourite. I like the way the bowl sounds, and the patterns when it's tapped. Even though I agree that this is likely not the best way of showing said patterns.

Where do you buy these kind of things?

  • Reminds me of beautiful Balinesian Metal Drums!

    PEACE BRETHREN

  • Take the tuning fork and touch it on the edge of a dish of shallow water. Also if you use the mallot that came with the bowl you can build up a resonance by going around the rime until its humming at full strength. That could get a you a stable pattern

  • what a nice set of singing bowls cost? Need more then one?

    peace
