Beautiful Defiance is a poem about humankind's will and determination to defy the laws of nature. The poem uses downtown New York City (Manhattan), in transition from day to night, as an illustration to make its point. The poem is not about New York City, or about any (particular) city. Again, the poem is about humankind's will and determination to defy the laws of nature.
We defy the laws of nature beautifully, and have even made laws against obeying the laws of nature. All a part of the long battle between humankind and nature. Of course, even though it appears nature is losing, eventually, nature will win. Until then, we are best advised to enjoy our beautiful defiance.
