@NutsandGuts Probably because it's stupid. To echo AJ78910, one is either an American or (s)he isn't. I don't call blacks "African American" and never will UNLESS they emigrated here from an African country and became American citizens. But interestingly, the "African Americans" I've met (some of whom are white!!) **don't want** to be called that because they LIVE HERE NOW. There was a REASON they came here. I call American-born blacks "people."
