The infusion called mate is prepared by steeping dry leaves (and twigs) of yerba mate in hot water, rather than in boiling water like black tea.
It is a slightly less potent stimulant than coffee and much gentler on the stomach. Drinking mate with friends from a shared hollow gourd (also called a mate) with a metal straw (a bombilla) is an extremely common social practice in Argentina.

  • The herb is called "Yerba Mate". The dish made for Yerba is called "Matero" (not "Mate"), no matter what exactly it is.

And you should speak "bombilla" as it's written, because now it sounds like "bombishia"(?).

  • @Voinar010

    "bombishia"(?)

I have a question for you:

    Is Spanish your mother tongue?

You cannot tell me how I should pronounce words in my own language! That is simply absurd!

There are differences in pronunciation in all languages in the world! Americans pronounce words differently as the English do. Does that mean that Americans are wrong!? NO.

If you study Spanish as a second language, my advice to you would be: Educate yourself as much as you can. There's always room for improvement.

  • Does it need to be hot water? As in, will it loose potency if I use cold water ?

  • @bigstock20

    It's a tea.

I've never tried preparing tea with cold water. I don't think you'll get much flavor.

  • @MagaCarey Umm... sorry. You're absolutely right!

I forget about different pronounciation in Spanish.

    Anyway... take it easy! ;)

  • @bigstock20 there's a variant called terere, mostly drink in Paraguay, you mix it with cold juice from a cytric (i recomend lemon) but you have to drink it slowly, because mate helps your digestion, and if drink cold it REALY ACCELERATES YOUR DIGESTION (if you get my drift)

  • yerba mate is like a sacrament of communion with mother earth!!!! it's such a beautiful drink, it's an immediate mood booster and it's medicinal

  • Muchas gracias, Maga. Your video is very clear and precise. I love your accent, sounds Argentinian? Hmm, su tiene una voce linda? Lo siento, mi espanol es muy malo.
