  • No, I just replaced the stock flywheel. Yeah, it's heavy but you can't fit anything else without sourcing a specific clutch. You can't use an OEM clutch with a solid, lightened flywheel. Not sure why, but the garage and saabcentral forum seemed to confirm it. At 82k, the clutch is probably quite close to giving up. I'd suggest a full service before you upgrade... or you could run in to problems, especially with the turbo.

  • Would be better without all of the notes! Yes, I heard the clutch slip, but I want to watch it :-( Have you fixed the slippage?

  • Sorry about the notes...

The clutch hasn't been replaced yet; partly because it's still driveable at the moment and largely because I can't find a clutch strong enough for the next upgrade.

  • Ah, gotcha. I have been considering the MP performance ECU, but I am very concerned about reports of clutch slippage in our cars! Has it gotten much worse? How many miles are on your clutch?

  • Yes, it went bang! The clutch, pressure place & flywheel were replaced about 3 months ago.

It's not the clutch that gives up, it's the dual mass flywheel. If it slips all the time, it's the clutch. If it slips sometimes and not others, it's the flywheel. I had almost 60 degrees of play in my flywheel which rendered it almost undriveable.

I'm at stage 3 now, which needs a stronger pressure plate. The ONLY place that stock it is Abbotts Racing.

  • *pressure plate, not place ;)

The car had done just over 40k when it went... and 15k of that was running stage 1. The garage said my old clutch had plenty of meat left on it and didn't need to be replaced, but I'd already bought it by then... so you may get away with just a flywheel for stages 1 & 2 (bsr) if it started to slip. Cost me £190 for the flywheel, £100 to fit it.

Speak to Matt @ MP first... he's honest enough to tell you if he's had many complaints.

  • Thanks!!! Yea, mine is sitting at around 82k miles right now, so I figure the clutch doesn't have a great deal of life left.

These dual mass flywheels scare me, I have heard a number of complaints about them... besides that, they must be heavy as hell! It takes our cars so long to rev! Did you go with a lightweight flywheel?
