Until LeMond won the tour an American had never won it after that Americans won 50% of the tours in the next 20 years. When Greg first won the tour profits for the event due to increased interest in the rich USA increased immensely. If a cancer survivor from America wins everyone makes more money. Because the Giro is mostly followed by Italians there are greater profits if an Italian wins and 14 of the last 20 have been won by Italians. Just like sailing cycling is now powered by the rig.
