Emil von Sauer was a pupil of Liszt (1811-1886), who made probably the most successful recordings of any of the Liszt pupils. Sauer was noted for his aristocratic approach to music-making, with lashings of charm, elegance and style backed up by phenomenal technique.

This performance was recorded in 1923. It reminds me of the few scraps of fellow-Liszt-pupil Siloti we have surviving. The work is Liszt's arrangement of Mendelssohn's "On Wings of Song".

  • With an aristocrat and an aesthete like von Sauer, we can always expect beauty of tone, sensitivity of touch, and a respect for style.

  • The best job of this piece on the YouTube. There can I hear supreme music played by marvelous fingers beyond noises and ages.

  • This is simply priceless. Thanks for posting!

  • Some day I'm going to come up with a scientific explanation of why 80+ year old recordings (and playing) sound superior to those made recently! Many disagree with me, but to my ears these recordings are hypnotizing - today's treble-heavy, room-filling sound overwhelms the listener in short time. Where was the term "listening fatigue" back then? It didn't exist. If anyone agrees with my "warped" view, please sound off!

  • Great delicacy, wonderful pacing and line.

  • Brilliant! Stunning! Bravo! TY.

  • thanks for this
