We are adding a second chamber to our woodfire kiln that is made out of discarded electric kilns. The base is fire brick and the floor is hard brick. The fire box is a small electric kiln placed on its side. The top needs to have a square opening for the chimney. You can control the temperature between the two chambers by changing the height of the bricks. The kiln will fire to cone 10 with hardwood and pine. All work has been bisqued. While you can fast fire, we prefer a 30-40 hour firing to build ash. Soda is added when the kiln reaches cone 8-9 several times. We use one to three pounds of soda depending on the effect we want. The kiln needs to be fired down because it looses heat very quickly and there is a chance that the work could be damaged. Music on the video is by Burnt Earth.
