I am a 13 year old with an old soul. I LOVEEEE THIS SONG!!!!!!!

It's not difficult. Replace the object of affection from a girlfriend to (no, not drugs - although the interpretation works there, too) a hymm that Sam offers in thanks to his own artistic muse/inspiration and the somewhat disjointed lyrics all click into place. If not, simply enjoy it as a great early '60s party record. And is Sam giving the high sign to Motown towards the close? I think he's saying/singing "...do the Monkey ...". And I swear he sounds like he's smiling as he does.

@wm631 Hmmm....care to explain?
-
Bobby Womack, I read, said that Sam really lived this song. He had dinner most nights with an actually spread of seven different kinds of meat, and told him that he "never wanted to give this life up".

Master vocalist at his peak, and a great production. And Sam, by this time, was turning into the subtlest lyricist in pop music - this song has more thought going on underneath it than just happy romance.
