In the exhibition hall of MIDEM 2012 in Cannes, a new tablet application called Tonara which promises to revolutionize musical performance is being demonstrated. Basically it is a digital sheet music platform, but unlike earlier platforms it is interactive. The software can process what you are playing in real time and the cursor moves along with the music as you play it which means it can scroll automatically without physical page turning or even pressing a foot pedal. Apparently it will even stop for mistakes, rubato, etc. To date, however, it only contains public domain music since they have yet to negotiate contracts with intellectual property owners. It also it is not yet equipped to process input from percussion instruments or even accordions and also cannot read anything other than conventionally notated music. It will be interesting to see if it can ever follow a John Cage score.
