This video:
great coordination/independence exercise involving an ostinato (repetitive figure)in 5 with the feet (RLRLL), 3/2 rumba clave laid down with one hand, and soloing with the free limb
Any melodies happening here are roughly in the Afro-Cuban vein (especially in terms of phrasing and the push and pull of rhythm, going from 8ths to triplets, etc)
This kind of interplay between two voices (in terms of phrasing and creating the illusion of speeding up and slowing down by going from eighths to 8th note triplets (or 8ths to quarter note triplets) and back is part of what makes African-based drumming so very special.
When you combine three different areas of playing drums, you'll find yourself in a totally new place ... ie, here, I'm soloing, holding down an ostinato in 5, and holding down a 3/2 rumba clave ostinato.
Hard to hear in this vid, but what I actually said was: "Obviously it's difficult stuff but it's a lot of fun and it's just a way to be creative."
