Claudette Colbert (Sept.13,1903 - July 30,1996) was a French-born American stage and film actress.

Born in Saint-Mandé, France and raised in New York City, Colbert began her career in Broadway productions during the 1920s, progressing to film with the advent of talking pictures. She established a successful film career with Paramount Pictures and later, as a freelance performer, became one of the highest paid entertainers in American cinema.

Colbert was recognized as one of the leading female exponents of screwball comedy, but was also known for her versatility; she won the Academy Award for Best Actress for her comedic performance in It Happened One Night (1934), and also received Academy Award nominations for her dramatic roles in Private Worlds (1935) and Since You Went Away (1944).

Her film career began to decline in the 1950s, and she made her last film in 1961. She continued to act extensively in theater and briefly television during her later years. After a career of more than 60 years, Colbert retired to her home in Barbados, where she died at the age of 92, following a series of strokes.

---------------

Torch Singer (1933) is a lavishly-mounted soap opera with Claudette Colbert having a child out of wedlock, giving it up for adoption, then leaving that life behind as she becomes a scandalous nightclub chanteuse. Colberts keynote song was Give Me Liberty or Give Me Love by Leo Robin and Ralph Rainger.

  • the best rendition of this song I have ever heard ! The tune's just right, her voice is just perfect for the lyrics, sung with passion.

  • What a woman! (sigh!)... This song was composed for "Torch Singer" (1933), and if you get a chance to catch the movie, you'll see and hear a major star in a true revelation... Claudette Colbert as (gasp!) sex symbol... Check it out... My, oh my!

  • She sounds like Greta Keller to Me!!! This is just FANTASTIC!!!

  • Claudette was a woman of multiple talents. She sang in 'The Smiling Lieutenant' as well. She gives a very varied and intelligent performance in 'Torch Singer'.

  • In 1984 I saw Claudette in a West End play, "Aren't We All?" Her co-star was Rex Harrison, and it was very enjoyable. She had a real stage presence. The play was staged at the Theatre Royal Haymarket, London. Didn't know she recorded songs. Very charming. Thanks, ed.

  • It is a pleasure to discover that among Claudette Colbert's many skills singing was one of them that she managed very competent. Thanks for sharing!

  • sure I read it but I just didn't know that she could sing, what a surprise!

I'm gonna watch the movie now!!!! :) thanks
