JONAS BAES: BASBASAN [1983]

BASBASAN [to bless] for 20 Bean-Pod Rattles [Hanunoo-Mangyan, "buray dipay"] and 20 Men's Voices {plus "hissing" sounds, hand claps, and bamboo pipes] by JONAS BAES [born 1961]. The instrumentalists and vocalists encircle the audience so that the spatial movements of the sounds are felt during a live performance. Completed by Baes during a field research in the mountains of Mindoro Island [in the Philippines] in early 1983, while engaged in research with the Iraya-Mangyan people. The work is dedicated to his mentor Jose Maceda. This performance was rendered during an indignation concert at the University of the Philippines, condemning government summary executions of opposing political leaders.
