I admit: It takes some persistence to stay awake watching all 7 chapters of this 55 minute 'infomercial', which was shot in Germany in 1949. Even for the standards of those days the photographic quality is poor. The storyline is very thin and a bit staged. So it takes a real die-hard beetle lover to appreciate the film.

The first minutes of the film look like a wartime 'deutsche Wochenschau'. The powerful bombastic music amplifies that atmosphere.

The film was a collaboration between Esso and the Wolfsburg volkswagen plant. This was only 4 years after the war. Only few could affort to drive a car. Amazing is to see the early split window car playing a main role in the film: Kleiner Wagen, grosse Liebe. The pretty lady in this clip is Hilde Hildebrand. She was a well known german pre-war actress. She plays alongside less well known actors like Jakob tiedtke, Beppo Brem appear in this film.

  • I don't know why, I just think the VW Beetle is the most beautiful car ever built.

Air-cooled engine over rear axle, starts easily in cold weather..an engineering marvel of simplicity (and I like the shape too).

  • Simple, handles well, amazingly tough, good ecenomy, they have all the basics needed in a car and well done. I own a '75 Bug that like any old car has had a few problems but outside of that its a brilliant peppy charactersitic car that gets attention just passing through car shows despite being a lightly rusty $1800 purchase. It stole attention from fresh shiny hot rods, restored valuble classics, and rubbish ricers! Unlike most cars bugs look best stock.

  • I've owned three Beetles, my dad had two. I love working on them, and all that, but, I have to point out something negative-

Your face is too close to the windshield. A guy in a big old heavy car pulled out right in front of me, I hit him in the driver's side door, and my face hit the windshield, and it broke my nose. There isn't enough space for the body to stretch naturally, like it does under forwards g-loading. That aspect is a poor aspect of design. I'll always love Dr Ferdinand Porsche!

  • @Teratop Who the fuck is Adolf Hitlet?

  • HAHA Bremsprobe!!! Breaketest!!! Today no body gives a s**t about breaks.

  • what the fuck is the 1st second noise mixed with female voice? :|

  • I had a 1962 bug and it was the toughest vehicle I ever had and the best engineered, It's too bad todays cars are not as user friendly as these old bugs were and everytime I think of the little car I smile remembering all the good times I had in it, I can remember 4x4s stuck in the snow and I drove right through it without spinning a wheel. All I can say is what a great car.

  • she looks gooten hotten.......LOL

  • i feel like they are talking about invading some country lol

  • cool

  • the face from the VW - beetle is deignd by adolf hitlet

die front ist von adolf hitler designd

  • Wow, just think that, scarcely four years before this was made, Germany just suffered massive trauma from WW2, Hitler committed suicide, and their country was broken up into four pieces by American, British, French, and Soviet occupation.

All of that behind the quaint mood shown, featuring the Type 1 as the means to rebuilding their lives.
