The sound does not come from the "Transmission". This Engines are driven by Three-Phase AC Induction Motors wich are powered by GTO(Gate-Turn-Off)-thyristor based pulse-width-modulated inverters. The sound is produced by the modulation-frequency of these Inverters which produces vibrations in the motor windings. I think they ramp up the Frequency from low to high at startup to minimize switching losses or so. And those "harmonic steps" are surely not randomly chosen by Siemens :-).

@Locomotivefan2009 That's an amazing prime mover! I would love to see it live! I think the pitches may be: F, G, A, B, C, D, E, F, G, A, B ,C, D, as I found them on my guitar. As for the octaves, it might be F4, G4, A4, B4, C5, D5, E5, F5, G5, A5, B5, C6, D6. If I am right, knowing the A4 is 440Hz, every "harmonic step" 's frequency can be found! If I'm wrong, please let some musician correct me! :-)

@Locomotivefan2009 But it sounds weird anyway :D. If John Cage would still be alive I bet he would have used this for his sound (music) production :D.
